Now I Get It (9/14/2012)

(This article was originally published by me as a guest author at the site called “Surly and Scribe.”)

So you can’t really select one sentence from one side to sum up an entire negotiating process. And it isn’t fair to take one statement out of context and impute the speaker’s full intentions based on just that one statement. And people misspeak, and people are sometimes less clear than they mean to be. However, Gary Bettman’s most recent statements include one little closing sentence that cannot be ignored:

“‘The thought was somehow they got slammed in the negotiations last time. They didn’t. We made at the time what we thought was a fair deal. It actually turned out to be more fair than it should have been.’’

Aha. Now I get it.
